New York-based label, Tanaka, was founded by Sayori Tanaka in 2017. Inspired by her Japanese heritage and upbringing, Tanaka integrates the principle of wabi sabi—the beauty of imperfection—into her design process. By foregrounding the raw material from which each piece derives, Tanaka draws attention to the relationship between art and nature. Through minimal intervention, Tanaka gives form to that which lies inherent in the material itself, exposing each garment’s natural simplicity. With an emphasis on craftsmanship, Tanaka sources top-tier fabrics from around the world to offer a label that is both quality-driven and timeless. Design experience gained at Uniqlo and Yohji Yamamoto is also expressed through the label’s androgynous appeal: straight-leg jeans and oversized jackets are inherently genderless in construction. Denim staples permeate the collection and feature interesting paneled constructions, rivet detailing, and dye techniques. By speaking to tradition as much as to the contemporary moment, Tanaka expresses the beauty in simplicity through a line of wardrobe essentials intended to last a lifetime.
